Discovering What Matters: Goal Setting

Introduction to Goal Setting

This lesson introduces students to goal setting by helping them explore their personal interests, inspirations, motivations, and passions. Through restorative practices and collaborative learning strategies, students will create a personal booklet that reflects what is most important to them. The lesson will conclude with an activity where students articulate their goals in their booklets.

Post-it notes, Pens, Worksheets, Discussion Questions, Printable Cards, Construction paper, Markers, Glue, Scissors, and Stapler or yarn for binding

Step 1

Do Now

5 mins

  • Prompt: "Think about someone you admire. Write down who they are, what they have achieved, and why you admire them."
  • Give students 5 minutes to write their responses in a journal or on a piece of paper.
  • After 5 minutes, invite a few students to share their responses with the class briefly.

Step 2

Introduction

5 mins

  • Explain the objective of the lesson: to understand what is important to each student and use that understanding to help set personal goals.
  • Share the agenda for the lesson: discussions, activities, and reflections.

Step 3

Class Discussion

10 mins

  • Facilitate a class discussion using prepared questions about personal interests, inspirations, motivations, and passions.
  • Encourage students to think deeply and share their thoughts.
  • Ensure equitable participation across the class.

Step 4

Think-Pair-Share Activity

10 mins

  • Distribute Post-it notes and pens to each student.
  • Ask students to write down their answers to questions about their favorite things to do, favorite people, inspirations, and motivations.
  • Have students pair up and share their answers with a partner.
  • Circulate the room to listen in on conversations and provide encouragement.

Step 5

Arts and Crafts: Creating Personal Booklets

  • Provide students with construction paper, markers, glue, scissors, and other decorative materials.
  • Distribute the questions from the inspirational printable cards and the goal-setting worksheet.
  • Instruct students to create a personal booklet, using each question as a prompt for a section in their booklet. They can write, draw, or collage their answers.
  • Assist students as needed and encourage creativity.

Goal Articulation Activity

5 mins

  • Guide students to articulate one SMART goal based on their reflections in the booklet.
  • Ask students to include this goal as the final section of their booklet.

Step 7

Reflection and Closure

5 mins

  • Ask students to reflect on what they discovered about themselves during the lesson.
  • Facilitate a short discussion on how understanding personal interests and motivations can help in setting meaningful goals.
  • Conclude the lesson by summarizing key points and encouraging students to keep thinking about their goals.
